STACEY CONSTRUCTION - EDITORIAL
BUSINESS PLATFORM

This is the first of a series of features being run about Stacey Construction, the nationwide construction company based in Wiveliscombe near Taunton.

Stacey Construction is a success story, having grown from a turnover of £300,000 to turnover around £15-20m which the Company now enjoys. Founded by Mike Stacey back in 1967 the Company has grown considerably, particularly since the addition of Mike’s son Shaun to the business 21years ago in 1983. The pair are clearly equipped with the skills of top management to run their company, and they expect high standards from all of their employees, many of whom have grown with the company over the decades. Both Mike and Shaun are very hands-on directors, strong believers that you only succeed through sheer hard work and determination, of course a little good fortune along the way can also help!

Based in Wiveliscombe, a total of approx 150 employees work for Stacey’s altogether, with approx 25 of these working at the head office in Administration, Accounts, Buying, Plant Control, Estimating, Quantity Surveying, and of course Contract Management. The majority of employees work out on site however, across all the trades one would expect: bricklaying, carpentry, joinery, ground working (drainage etc), as well as plasterers and labourers.
Stacey’s also run a separate joinery workshop (Station Joinery), which makes not only timber products required within the construction business, but also bespoke windows, doors, and gates etc for anyone else requiring them. Made from any number of woods including oak, these products suit many old farmhouse style properties. With a mechanical workshop to maintain the company’s fleet of approx 50 vehicles, Stacey’s is certainly a rather busy place!!
Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that the company also owns West Country Guns & Country Clothing in Wiveliscombe – one of the premier Oakley dealers in the country, stocking Oakley glasses, clothing, footwear and accessories. Also in stock are a range of clothing items from the Musto, Puffa, Hucclecote, Barbour, Hoggs, Le Chameau, and Aigle brands (the latter two being rather nice Wellington boot makers!)

One of the most refreshing things about Stacey Construction (and the Mike Stacey Group as a whole) is its willingness to support its roots. Apart from employing a good percentage of people from the area, Stacey’s has, amongst other things, always been the main sponsor of Wiveliscombe Rugby Club and has now also kindly sponsored the roundabout at the entrance to the town – not only paying for the plants and basket, but also the regular maintenance of the roundabout in terms of grass and weed control.
Perhaps it is no surprise then that the Stacey employees are very much appreciated too; in fact, numerous apprentices have been encouraged to undertake vocational courses at Scat to further their training and better themselves in their chosen field.
A whole team that certainly pulls together well, and one that deserves the respected list of blue-chip clients that Stacey’s has.
