February 2001
A definite coup for Stacey Construction (the national construction company from Wiveliscombe) when projects completed by them were recognised by a royal visit twice within the space of 2 weeks. Shaun Stacey (Managing Director) was invited to attend two separate official openings at which HRH The Princess Royal presided. The first event was held at Stover School, Newton Abbot on 23 January at the opening of the School's new Millennium and Art IT Centre, which Stacey Construction built. A major feature of this futuristic building is its cantilever roof with zinc covering which makes it a fitting structure for the new millennium. Shaun Stacey proudly stated that "The architectural design of this innovative building provided a great challenge to the construction team which we thoroughly enjoyed. We hope that the Centre will provide a great deal of joy to pupils and staff alike." Stacey
Construction also participated in a 'construction and the
environment' initiative undertaken by Year 9 pupils on the site of the
new Art/IT Block whilst it was under construction. The Company enabled
pupils to visit the 'live' site to collect samples of material to be
used in their investigation. Stacey Construction
also supplied them with technical and safety data sheets for directly
supplied materials, safety helmets and hi visibility waistcoats.
This activity was a huge success with the students and culminated in them presenting their findings to fellow pupils, staff, Architect who designed the Art/IT Block and key Stacey Construction personnel. The second official occasion with HRH The Princess Royal was at Washford Mill, Watchet on Friday 2 February 2001 where HRH The Princess Royal agreed to open the completion of the restoration of The Mill. When HRH The Princess Royal was again introduced to Shaun Stacey she actually remembered him from the previous week and asked him if this was a different project from the last one she saw him at! The restoration
of Washford Mill was another project successfully completed by Stacey
Construction. Shaun Stacey stated that "We were pleased
to be offered the opportunity to tackle this venture. It required an
enormous amount of detailed planning and co-ordination with both the
Architect and Client to ensure that the restoration work preserved as
many of the Mill's original features as possible." 'The new Mill'
will be of great interest and benefit to the local community and visiting
holidaymakers and is now officially open and operational although full
'service' will properly commence at the end of March.
