Stacey Construction wins award for high standard of construction & workmanship for the development at 36 – 46 High Street, Wellington, the award was made by LABC Building Excellence Award in association with Taunton Deane Borough Council on 7th October 2010.

Stacey Construction was appointed by National Developers Hawks Meadow Properties to construct the supermarket with car park and a new access road from the High Street.  The

contract also included four apartments above two shops to replace the derelict buildings on the High Street which were such an eyesore for so long.

The flats, situated centrally in Wellington and with allocated parking spaces in the new supermarket car park, were marketed through local estate agents.  A spokesperson for Hawks Meadow said “the units would be ideal starter homes for Wellington and we are confident that the new store would satisfy

a great need and bring with it valuable jobs for the area”.

Demolition of the existing derelict buildings had been completed after the discovery and careful removal of a small colony of bats in collaboration with ecologists and Natural England.  Replacement roosting facilities were provided on site and a representative for Stacey Construction commented that “great care was taken to accommodate the roosting requirements of the bats within the

construction programme and working practices”.

One key sustainability feature of this development was the crushing of the old buildings on site to provide the recycled hardcore material being used under the buildings and car park.

Mike Stacey, Chairman of Stacey Construction on receiving the award said he was “highly delighted to receive this award on behalf of the team who had worked so hard on the project.”
